A neighbor saw 3 teenagers running through the back yard and jump a fence. Victim went out to her car to check and her wallet hand been taken from her purse. Juveniles were later located and confronted but denied taking anything from the car. They were just using the back yard as a cut through.

072607 1645 to 1651 hrs- 2765 Sandy Plains Rd (Dunkin Donuts)- victim purchased a bagel and  set it on a table and returned to the counter. He observed a W/M take the bagel and run out the door. Victim was able to obtain the tag number from the fleeing suspect vehicle. Through independent investigation, responding officer Corporal McCraw  located the suspect vehicle at a nearby residence. Teenage male admitted to his father that he had stolen the bagel. The father advised the officer that he would deal with his son. The victim was satisfied with the parental intervention and decided not to prosecute the teenager for stealing his bagel. Congratulations to Corporal McCraw for the successful clearing of this case.

072407 1500 to 1630 hrs- 1275 Powers Ferry Rd- victim left his work briefcase on the ground next to this car. When he remembered it, it was gone.

The caller ID indicated that the call came from their home phone number, but no one was supposed to be home. 060807  0048 hrs.  Waterbury Ln (East Hampton sub)—a red 2-dr vehicle was observed parked near the pool gate and four teen WM’s were present.  The vehicle left the area and then the teens walked to the incident location and proceeded to steal cash and golf equipment from an unlocked vehicle in a garage.  The complainant approached the suspects and they dropped most of the equipment and ran.  Two of the suspects couldn’t be described beyond the fact they were white.  The third had long “hippie-like” dark hair and the fourth had long, bushy blond hair.  They escaped with one RAM golf driver and $200 cash.  This incident is possibly linked to yesterday’s series of seven trespass cases in the same area.

052407 2300 to 060507 1100 hrs-Old Bee Tree Circle- house recently burglarized. Victim now discovered that a brick was used to break out a rear glass window to the garage and the window was pulled out to gain entry. Does not appear anything is missing.

Stolen Autos and Damage to Property Alert-

We have had a series of serious incidents involving stolen vehicles being used to damage the property of homeowners, mailboxes, cars parked in the driveway and even damage to houses. These are occurring particularly in 410, 411 and 412 beats. Please advise your communities to keep a watchful eye for this type of suspicious activity. We only know that the abandoned vehicles have been reported as stolen. We don't know who the suspects are. Please see the below. Mark

021807 0130 hrs-N. River Trail (North Landings)- someone flattened the victim’s tire in his driveway.

022507 0430 hrs- North Landing Subdivision- 5 reports of destruction of mailboxes. These appear to be intentional damage by use of a vehicle.

022507 0500 to 0800 hrs- Millhouse Run- victim heard a loud noise like something struck his house. Investigation showed damage to his garage door as though a vehicle had struck it.

022507 0500 hrs- Timberbrook Trace (The Bluffs at Spencer’s Trace)- yard trenched. Vehicles picked up on neighborhood video surveillance, being a Black Ford Expedition and a Tan Mercedes. Tags observed and ran on NCIC. Both vehicles had been reported stolen by Marietta PD.

022507 0550 hrs- Summerford Dr (Summerford)- 5 reports of Criminal Damage to Property by the above mentioned vehicles. Suspects are unknown as the vehicles had been reported as stolen.

021807 0700 to 0740 hrs- Chestnut Ridge Subdivision- Longfellow Trail and Chestnut Ridge Way- 6 residences had their yards trenched by an unknown vehicle.

021807 0650 hrs- North Hembree Rd- 1994 Nissan Maxima- listed vehicle was stolen from ATow in Alpharetta. Vehicle was found abandoned in a lake at North Hembree Rd.

022507 0600 hrs- Old Suttons Way (Sutton’s Orchard)- damage to speed limit sign by the above mentioned vehicles.

022507 0430 hrs- Woodrum Trail- mailbox damaged. See above

022507 0548 hrs- Emory Dr- mailbox damaged. See above.

022407 2300 to 022507 0708 hrs- Sawmill Terrace- two reports of damaged mailboxes. See above.

022507 0555 to 0736 hrs- Lake Chimney Court (Chimney Lakes)- mailbox damaged by the above vehicles. Vehicles found abandoned in a cul de sac and impounded. Three teenagers observed running from the vehicles.

030207 0351 hrs- Overlook Dr- someone drove a stolen truck into the victim’s vehicles that were parked in his driveway.

030107 2200 to 0800 hrs- 8 reports of intentional damage to mailboxes and yards. Stolen cement truck recovered earlier in the day in the same area. Probably related to all of the other similar incidents in recent days.

Bump Keys

The Precinct 4 Criminal Investigations Unit has cleared  the East Hampton burglary and both East Cobb "thru the siding" burglaries through the arrest of 2 individuals. Below is the Public Information Release by Cobb Police

Burglary Arrest (in Zone 4) The Cobb County Police Department Criminal Investigation Unit at Precinct Four is investigating burglaries that have taken place on Blackwell Farm Drive and Rosetta Landing in Marietta, Georgia.

According to investigators, on 02/10/07 a home in the East Hampton Subdivision in Cobb County was burglarized and a 2003 Porsche was stolen. The Porsche was located by Alpharetta Police and after a short chase the vehicle crashed. One subject was taken into custody. Sgt. B. Mason and Det. G. Ord of the Cobb County Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Unit went to the suspect’s residence in Sandy Springs, Georgia and located stolen property from another burglary that occurred in Cobb County.  The method of entry used in this burglary was removing the siding from the rear of the home and breaking through the sheet rock.  Two suspects were interviewed by Cobb County Police and the City of Alpharetta Police.  Information obtained in the interview led detectives to a location where other stolen property from the burglaries could be located.  Some of the additional property has been connected to a second burglary where entry was made by removing the siding and breaking through the sheet rock.

Arrested are 17-year-old Travis Daniel Adams and 18-year-old Andre Djuan Jones, both of Sandy Springs, Georgia.

The suspects used a 1998 purple Nissan Pick Up while committing these burglaries.  They also own a silver Nissan 350Z and a red Nissan 240SX.

I'll keep my day job...

I want to share a couple of items with you that have been raised by two of our members. I received an email from one of our members who could not attend our meeting who provided the below comment after reviewing the content notes from the meeting.

His comment was... "I would comment, however, on your advice for folks to get a really, really bad dog. We have a neighbor whose pit bull is not properly trained and has charged small children on a number of occasions. I suspect it's only a matter of time before something tragic occurs because of this neighbor's irresponsible attitude toward an animal that is, in effect, a weapon."

This was my reply...

Yes, you are right., with power comes responsibility. Those who choose to own a weapon of any kind (dogs included) will be held accountable for irresponsible behavior with the weapon. Neither I nor the police department are encouraging irresponsible dog ownership.

The comment really was intended more as a joke than anything else but the fact of the matter is, most people are afraid of large or at least large sounding dogs and won't challenge them. I don't support the ownership of aggressive animals unless they are properly handled by their owners, which certainly wouldn't be to let them run at large. Of course, if someone is breaking into your home, then oh well, it's probably going to hurt!

The police department can't control or be responsible for others being irresponsible. We can only react to the irresponsibility, which we will and do.

My disclaimer is-no one should own any animal that could be aggressive towards others unless you are prepared to handle them properly and not turn them loose on your community. Neither I nor the police department are encouraging, supporting, or suggesting that you do. Please be responsible with your pets, even the little cutzie Foo Foo dogs that Elizabeth apparently has! As for my attempt at humor....well I'll just keep my day job.

I received this concern from one of our members. I have already addressed this in private with another member but I will now share this with the group. The question from someone was as follows...

Dear Sir, I am forwarding to you a link to a video regarding illegal entry into homes by "bumping" a lock. I am wondering whether this is really a problem, and whether our neighbors should determine which locks they have and consider replacing those that can be entered in this manner.

Thanks again to the Cobb County police Dept. for initiating a very worthwhile program. I am learning a lot.

My reply was...

I am familiar with "bump keys" and have done some research on it. By all appearances, it could be a real problem although I am not personally familiar with any such incident in our area. We do on occasion receive a Burglary report where there is no apparent forced entry into the house. So, how would we know if the victim left something accidentally unlocked or they got "bumped"?

If a person is concerned enough about this potential problem then maybe they should consider investing in the mentioned "bump proof" locks. I have purposefully decided against sending out the video showing how to make and use a bump key. I don't want to educate the public on how to break into someone's home. Maybe a call to a locksmith would be appropriate.

I just spoke with a Locksmith about key bumping. He says it's absolutely true and can be done by an 8 year old- his words. He advised that 99% of all common locks can be bumped. According to him, the only lock on the market that is bump proof is- Medeco- and they range in price from $75 to $125 per lock, depending on whether it's a door knob lock or a dead bolt lock.

I AM NOT ENDORSING MEDECO. There may be others out there and maybe this is the only brand he carries. But, he said anything else can be bumped. If a person is concerned enough I recommend that they contact their own locksmith for advice, don't take mine. Hope this helps.

Coyotes

The issue of coyote sightings had come up twice in recent days in the 417 beat area, especially around Paper Mill Road and Columns Drive . I have talked with experts on the subject who have basically advised me that coyotes are pretty much everywhere. They are wild animals just trying to survive day to day, pretty much like deer. They especially like the type of areas such as those around Paper Mill Rd and Columns Drive .

Wild animals determine where they want to live by their needs. They need a water source- the Hooch and Sope Creek, shelter- all of that wooded area, and food. If they are having their needs met, they will remain and/or come back. I was told that we can try to trap them all we want, but other coyotes will just move in, if the environment is to their liking.

If you want the coyotes to go away, you MUST remove one of their needs. The only one of those that you have any real control over is the food.These are food sources for coyotes- Bird & Squirrel feeders, domestic pet food left outside, garbage left outside- even in cans, barbeque grills, and small domestic animals, especially cats. Anything that produces a scent of food draws their attention. Take away the food sources and scents, and they go elsewhere.

There is apparently some good information on the internet dealing with this subject. Type in the buzz words on suburban coyotes, coyote control, control/repelling wild animals, etc and you will receive several links. There is information availabe from these links for repelling wild animals, various chemicals or odors that you can spread around to discourage them.

But I was also told that you probably will be repelled/repulsed by the same scents. One of the best sources of information is probably the Georgia Department of Natural Resources
